Tampa/St. Pete, FL
As Florida’s second largest metropolitan area, the Tampa-St. Petersburg area brings together all of the best parts of Florida. Native Americans originally inhabited the area, and Spanish explorers passed through in the mid-1500s. It wasn’t until the early 1800s that U.S. Army and civilian settlers arrived.
The Tampa-St. Pete area lacks the glitz of Miami, and it’s not as crowded as Orlando, but the Gulf coast beaches are a beautiful escape, and attractions such as Tampa’s Busch Gardens have something for everyone. After exploring Tampa’s Lowery Park Zoo and Florida Aquarium, visitors should take a trip across the bay to St. Petersburg for a hike on the Pinellas Trail or to visit the beautiful Sunken Gardens.
An area that is definitely worth visiting is Ybor City. This neighborhood was established when a Cuban exile moved his cigar manufacturing business to Tampa from Havana. During the day, Ybor is a smattering of shops and small restaurants, while at night it is the main Tampa club scene. Neighborhoods such as Hyde Park and Davis Island are some of less-well-known gems of Tampa, with lots of character and many shopping and dining options.
Being a tropical climate, the Tampa-St. Pete area is very hot and humid during the summer. Winter is very mild, and spring and fall is usually warm and pleasant.
